With the economy in trouble and more layoffs being announced every day, many people are looking for ways to stay out of trouble with credit card debt. Debt relief is possible, not only for credit card debt, but also for other forms of indebtedness—but you have to know where to go and what to ask in order to find the best ways to give yourself some relief. Debt stress can lead to health problems, marital tension, and even loss of employment, if you don’t take some proactive steps to get yourself some breathing space.

The key to working with creditors, either directly or through a debt settlement company or attorney, is good communication. Unfortunately, for many of us, when debt starts to pile up, our tendency is to avoid creditors, even to avoid thinking about debt. But relief comes when you begin to take steps toward solving the problem, not from ignoring it. Here are some ideas you can use to get relief from debt and start the process of rebuilding your finances.

Debt Relief: Talking to Your Creditors

The first and most important step you can take toward debt relief is talking to your creditors. If you can establish and verify that you have a genuine financial hardship—because of medical bills, divorce, death of a wage earner, loss of employment or reduction of income, or some other event with major financial impact—you may qualify for hardship provisions from the creditor. These can include temporary delays in payments, reduced interest rates, and even reduction of the amount owed, in some cases.

If you’ve gotten behind on your mortgage or car payments, talk to your lender. Many banks have workout departments that specialize in working with troubled home loans to keep them out of foreclosure and return them to good status. Your auto lender will be more willing to be patient with you if you can explain why your payments have fallen behind, and what you are trying to do to get caught up. Some lenders will allow you to pay out the past-due balance over time, gradually returning your loan to on-time status.

Debt Relief: Credit Counseling and Debt Settlement

If your problems have grown beyond the point that you can handle them on your own, you may wish to consider working with a consumer credit counseling firm for debt relief. Consumer credit counseling firms are actually supported by banks and credit card companies, and as you can guess, their ultimate objective is to figure out a way for you to pay back the entire balance you owe. However, they do have the ability to intervene with lenders on your behalf, as long as you stay within the debt relief program’s guidelines, and keep your credit rating from taking a huge hit.

Debt settlement firms, on the other hand, are able to speak to lenders in order to negotiate settlement of your debt for less than the full amount owed. If you work with a debt settlement firm, it’s important to ask about fees and success rates—before you sign any sort of contract.

improve credit

Are you wondering about the difference between credit debt management, credit repair services and credit counseling? Perhaps it’s entirely clear that you’re missing payments, coming up short in your savings and experiencing fundamental money management problems; although, the answer isn’t so clearly laid out. There are many steps you can take on your own or you can go with one of the many credit repair companies out there. Just be careful that the company is legit by checking in with the Better Business Bureau to see that they’re not operating one of the credit repair scams.

One of the best credit repair services is credit counseling, which is usually free, easy and effective. Family Credit Counseling is a non-profit Christian organization that reaches out to borrowers nationwide to alleviate debt burden for families. Participants in the program will get an assessment of their spending habits and debt, learn how to rebuild credit and fix credit, develop a budget, end creditor calls, understand their credit reports and negotiate lower payments or interest rates. Additionally, the Credit Counseling Foundation (TCCF), another nationwide non-profit, will set debtors up with a personalized payment plan, negotiate lower interest rates, teach budgeting techniques, end collector calls and teach people how to reduce debt.

Debt consolidation credit services will set you up with a loan to pay off your annoying creditors. If you charge everything and allow your purchases to pile up, find yourself using one card to pay off another and can’t escape the accumulation, then a consolidation loan is probably the best way to put a stop to your out of control spending and repair your credit. You’ll pay one monthly payment to your credit repair business, rather than trying to keep track of all the minimum payments for all your cards. You’ll learn how to permanently stay out of debt and rebuild a positive credit history through an installment loan. Generally, you’ll have the choice between taking out a secured or unsecured loan. A secured loan will be attached to collateral, such as your home or your car, which will be seized if you default on your promise. With an unsecured consolidation loan, there is no collateral but your interest rate will be higher.

Before you can tackle credit repair services, some people may require tax debt relief. Perhaps your accountant made a mistake that cost you thousands and you’ve been discovered. A tax expert can often negotiate to settle your tax debts for less. You may receive a settlement letter style compromise to decrease the amount owed, an affordable monthly installment plan, a deferment plan where you don’t have to pay anything for a year, a partial payment agreement or a bankruptcy filing.

credit report

By definition, a credit report is the summary of how an individual manages his or her finances. This is quantified through a number, known as the FICO score, which ranges from the lowest score of 500 to the highest of 850. The average and acceptable score is about 700. The usage of credit cards is one of the important factors in assessing a person’s credit score, as is debt management. These factors clearly indicate an individual’s ability to manage credit.

There are five major factors that go into the making of credit reports and knowing these factors will help you in adopting the right debt management principles and obtaining the best credit score possible. The factors that directly influence your credit score are: your credit history, the total credit attached to your name, the timeliness of making your payments, and the number of your accounts, either closed or opened in the near past. If you have a low score, then credit repair measures are advised. The easiest and the fastest way to repair your credit score is by showing that you can pay your bills on time.

It is very easy to accelerate the repair of your credit report if you know how. The basic principles that qualify you for credit are discipline and payment ability. This can be established with the help of your credit cards. Charge everything that you buy regularly to your cards and ensure that you pay the bills before or on the due date, in full. Over a few months, this will add major points to your FICO score. Another short cut is to make use of debt consolidation services. In this way, you can combine all of your your debts into one manageable monthly payment.

A credit report represents how an individual manages his or her finances. There are roughly five factors that define this credit scoring, which is expressed through the FICO score, a number ranging between 500 and 850. The average score in US is more or less around 700. This report reflects how good an individual is with debt management. Financial institutions, both formal and informal, make their decision for advancing credit on this number.

Learn About Studen Loans

Although the media and financial institutions have been reporting about how crippling student loan debt is to modern American graduates, there are worse things in life.  Because of the economy, everything costs more, especially a college education.  Don’t get pressured into taking advice from questionable sources about paying off your student loan debt.  Unlike other things in life, there is always hope for paying off your student loan debt.

Interest Rates And Averages

In 2006, the average student loan debt of an American 4 year college graduate was $20,000.  The first payment on these loans is normally six months after graduation, whether you have a job or not.  This statistic is incredibly scary at first read.  It seems like you can’t win no matter how hard you try because of student loan debt.

However, when you born you owed some government somewhere a certain amount of money in future taxes.  It is next to impossible to get through modern American or European life without owing somebody a heck of a lot of money.  Have you ever looked at how much a house costs?  That will make your student loan look paltry in comparison.

Financial companies such as banks or other institutions that offer any kind of loan tend to charge you the highest interest rate possible from the start, since it is with interest rates that they make money. The good news however is that you do not necessarily have to pay the high interest rate for the rest of your college life.

You Are Not A Hopeless Case

There are always things you can do to negotiate a lower interest rate.  This is even better when you have had a job for a while, as you can prove that you are a low-risk borrower.  But you can always contact a debt management specialist at any point of your life.  These are often non-profit organizations that will offer you money management classes as well as a consolidation loan.

Having a $20,000 student loan debt may seem huge, but it actually is not as much as it would seem. Theoretically you can easily pay off that amount in monthly installments in approximately five to seven years. That period of time is certainly much shorter than a mortgage payment and you may even be rewarded with a refund on payments if you are able to make the required minimum payments on time. Something that is achievable with a regular job.

But you have to learn how to manage your money.  That’s the difficult bit.  You can’t get a new car, furnish your apartment and order pizza every night when you have a student loan debt to pay back.  In learning how to live frugally now, you not only learn more than your college every taught you, but you get a great credit score for paying back a loan.
